Yeah, I know the heading says 'sultanas' and the image is of star shaped biscuits, but I didn't have a picture of some sultanas. Plus, dried fruit isn't exactly photogenic. So let's pretend the image is relevant, and I'll carry merrily on!
Sultanas ... I eat these virtually every day, just a small handful mixed into my morning porridge, and I must've tried most supermarket ranges of sultanas at one time or another.
At their best sultanas are plump and juicy. At their worst they’re small and mean, maybe with the stalk still attached to catch in your teeth. (Never a pretty look over the breakfast table.) If you’re searching for a good budget buy I’d avoid Sainsburys lowest priced ones. Their standard own brand sultanas are fine, but the cheapest value range are invariably the small and mean variety. They might plump up if you soaked them for a while, but for instant snacking I’d not buy them.
Asda’s own brand are a bit ‘meh’. Occasionally okay, but nothing to write home about. Both Aldi and Lidl offer reasonable quality, but the best I’ve found by far are Tesco’s value range. (It pains me to type that as I'm no Tesco fan usually.) At 84pence for a 500g bag I’ve found them consistently good quality. Fruity and flavoursome, stalk free, a welcome addition to my breakfast bowl.
Any recommendations from products in value lines that you've found good quality as well as cheap?
