Much as I like the discount supermarkets Aldi and Lidl, there're still times when Sainsburys come up tops. I really needed a new duvet cover, the last one having been washed & used, washed & used until it was on beyond mending. So I headed off to the big orange supermarket with a discount coupon, £2.25 off if I spent £15.
I found a lovely teal floral duvet cover & pillowcases set half price, reduced from £25 to £12.50. Into the basket that went, followed by a couple of pints of milk, a packet of ginger snaps and - bargain buys being sold off for quick sale - 2 boxes of Freefrom mince pies. Only 30p a box. Delish! Even if I don't want to eat them straightaway they've got a best before date of March, so could be lobbed into the freezer. (Sainsburys were also selling off jars of mincemeat at 5p each. Just goes to show how timing's everything when it comes to shopping. If you're nifty with pastry, you could make some mince pies for pennies, and there's no rule to say you can't eat 'em at other times of the year than Christmas.)
At the checkout, my haul came 6p short of £15, so I was forced - forced I say!! - to spend 50p on a bar of choccie. Ahh, come on, it's Fairtrade chocolate. That cancels out the calories, doesn't it?
Once the money off coupon was processed, the total was £12.79, and I was a happy bunny.
